Garmin GPSMAP Feb 2016 Software Update

Garmin has released a big GPSMAP software update for Feb 2016. The update has very “big version number” increases. The update does ONLY cover current Garmin chartplotters – and not the legacy models. (As SemperFishing on TheHullTruth says – think Legacy if your Garmin is GRAY in colour – current models are BLACK at the moment)

The updates covers among others – support for the new Garmin G2 HD and G2 Vision HD charts and improved auto guidance with the new charts. Plus there is new options for the Quickdraw maps in HD. And a lot of other update. Read on – release notes for major platforms below.Garmin GPSMAP 8008

Garmin Nautix-In-View sunglass mount display

The new Garmin Nautix-In-View display, mounts on your sunglasses and provides quick access to important data from your chartplotter.

The “Feather Weight” Nautix-In-View display is “Google Glass” for marine devices. It is a tiny screen that communicates wireless with your compatible chartplotter. So far compatible chart plotters are the Garmin GPSMAP 7400/7600/8400/8600 series

The devices is reasonably light weight (29.7g) but Garmin calls that Featherweight – I would hate to see that bird…. as a Peacock tail feather weighs in at around 0.75 – 1 1/2 grams. So it weighs the same as 20-30 peacock feathers.

Garmin Helm iPad & iPhone App review

Garmin announced the new Garmin Helm remote control App for iOS (iPhone/iPad) this

week. So far it only supports the new Garmin GPSMAP 8000 series via Wi-Fi. Later other GPSMAP models will be included. But since we have a Garmin GPSMAP 8008 on the test-bed, we decided to take the Garmin Helm app for a test-run.

The Garmin Helm Test-Rig

As we don’t have a Garmin Wi-Fi access-point – we rigged up our own with a Cradlepoint MBR1400 router.  We configured the CradlePoint so 2 of the Ethernet ports and one virtual Wi-Fi access-points is routed to Garmin normal B class (176.16.x.x/255.255.0.0) – then we plugged the Garmin 8008 into the CradlePoint router. Garmin quatix Recall [Update 1]

Updated: As you can read below – Garmin has issued a recall on the quatix watch. But after speaking with a few International dealers – the situation seems unclear. There is no current replacement watch available – and the International dealers have issues shipping the watches back to Garmin with “defective” batteries.

But no current replacement watch is even worse – that means you can send in your watch now – and then wait until Garmin makes a new watch available. That does not sound good at all. Who knows how long it will be, before a new watch can be shipped.

So the International dealers are waiting for Garmin to update them on how to handle the situation – by letting clients wait for replacement watches before “activating” the recall – or just issue full refunds.

We will keep you posted as we hear more.

[original posting]

Garmin have identified a potential safety issue involving the quatix watch.

Given our longstanding commitment to safety and customer satisfaction, we are voluntarily recalling all quatix watches. The issue involves the battery being too close to the watch housing in some watches, which, when combined with salt water or heavy perspiration, can cause a small burn on the skin under the watch. We have received 1 report of this occurring.

The following serial number ranges are subject to this recall and should be returned for a free replacement. You can find the serial number on the rear casing of the watch.

337000001 through 337009999

37R000001 through 37R009999

You will need a return merchandise authorization (RMA) for a free replacement watch. Please send an email to quatix.recall@garmin.com and include the following information:

Name

Shipping address

Primary phone number

Manuals for Garmins new 8000 series are available for download

Revision A of Garmins 8000 Series (8008,8208,8012,8212, 8015, 8215 & 8500) are now available online.

No mention of the CAN interfaces so far though – but matches up quite well with the Garmin new GPSMAP 700 (721/741) series where the 12 pin sonar connector is not mentioned and the Network port is reserved for “future use”. So it seems like Garmin are keeping some goodies for later.
